Announcing Outside The Bowl II
Date: October 10, 2016

In my many years of studying belly dance I have come to realize that the name "belly dance" is far too general of a term to describe the dances we perform. And there are many who might agree that this isn't the term we should use to describe it at all. Unfortunately though, it's one of those names that has stuck, and it's been hard to "shimmy it off".

This blog really isn't here to discuss the name "belly dance" itself. However, there is no denying that what we call "belly dance" actually consists of many different styles, interpretations and layers within the art form. While I have primarily focused on the style that originates from Egypt, through oriental, baladi and folkloric dance, I can also appreciate that the movements from these dances have evolved in to something entirely new, original and creative. Some dancers prefer to stick with the roots of belly dance through its Arab origins, while others have taken it to a different level, by fusing belly dance with other types of dance, or belly dancing to non-Arabic music, and a whole lot more that would probably take me several paragraphs to explain.

As for me, I like to dabble in both sides of the spectrum. And with that, the dance show, Outside the Bowl was born! The show's concept was created by myself and the troupe members of Little Fish Belly Dance Company, and premiered in November 2015. The show involves bringing both traditional and not so traditional belly dance stylings together in one performance. The first half, called "Inside The Bowl" is all about honouring the roots of belly dance, through it's Arabic origins. Here, you will find performances of Oriental, baladi, and Egyptian folkloric dances such as Saidi and Falahi. The second half "Outside The Bowl", is where anything is possible! Here, we encourage our performers to take belly dance where ever they want it to go! Want to belly dance to the music of Prince? Go for it. Want to fuse belly dance with ballet and hip-hop dance? Sure, why not? There is quite literally an ocean of possibilities that exist in our Outside The Bowl segment.

In November 2015, Outside The Bowl raised $2000.00 for Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse (CCASA) - a charity that we (The Fish) strongly believe is doing amazing work for our community through providing sexual abuse education, research and advocacy, crisis intervention and counselling. So we are very pleased to announce Outside The Bowl II will be held on November 19, 2016, at the St. Stephen's Anglican Church, and we will once again be donating 100 per cent of the proceeds to the CCASA. This performance will feature Little Fish Belly Dance as well as numerous talented performers and groups from our Calgary belly dance community. A community that I am so very proud to be a part of and I am continually in awe at the belly dance talent that exists in our community. Whether you prefer to go Inside The Bowl, or Out, (or both) there is something for everybody at Outside The Bowl. The end result is a highly entertaining show that is full of variety and fun!. So I encourage everyone to come out and see this show on November 19th, and help support not only the Calgary Belly Dance Community, but the CCASA charity.

Click on the poster below for details on how to purchase tickets. And if you are on Facebook, checkout the event page - in the weeks to come, you will see posts about featured dancers in our show, and maybe even a little hint as to what you can expect to see on the evening of November 19th. I hope to see you there as we take you on a journey through the realm of belly dance where anything can happen!
