This Stage Of My Life

Upcoming belly dance show with the Little Fish
Date: February, 18, 2015

I am thrilled to tell you about an upcoming dance performance that will take place on March 14, 2015. This is the first show the Little Fish Belly Dance Company are putting on with myself as the artistic director and choreographer, so it will be an exciting time indeed! The Little Fish and I have been hard at work putting together a belly dance show which will feature two brand new group choreographies, as well as solo performances by each of the company members! Not only will this performance feature the Little Fish, but there will also be many more fabulous performances including:

  • Nine guest troupe performances from the flourishing Calgary Belly Dance Community
  • A special solo performance by the founder of Little Fish Belly Dance Company, Jumanah
  • Two student group performances from Soul Connexion Dance Studio - choreographed by Melika, a longtime member of the Little Fish and resident belly dance instructor at Soul Connexion
  • Plus, I'll be performing a duet with my fabulous dance partner, Lyla Adomatis, of Zafiet El Afrah dance group.

All proceeds from this show will be donated to the Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse and we are honoured to be supporting this local Calgary Charity and feel it is a very important cause!

We named the show "Student Hafla" and there are two reasons for this decision. Hafla is an Arabic word that can be used to describe a party with belly dance. And for this reason, we want to make this show super fun, festive and laid back where the Calgary Belly Dance Community can get together to support each other, share the stage, and present their choreographies to a warm, friendly and upbeat audience! We want everyone in the audience to clap their hands and groove to the music in their seats, and cheer for all the dancers on stage! And the word "Student" is there because even though this show will feature all levels of belly dance, from beginner to professional; I have personally always felt that everyone is a student of this art form no matter where they are at in their studies. Sometimes advanced or professional dancers can learn a lot from "going back to the basics" or studying with a new teacher who has a new approach to technique and style. Beginner students can be inspired by their teachers and mentors who have shared their knowledge and wisdom in class using their own experiences as a beginner dancer. Ultimately, learning dance is all about the journey, not the destination. There is always something new to discover in the journey and I'd like to think that if any of us dancers actually reached the point where we knew absolutely everything there was to know...would there still be that desire, that motivation, that spark to keep us on the journey? I believe if you attend this show you are going to see the "spark" in each and every dancer that graces the stage, and it is a beautiful thing!

Please check out my Shows page for details, location and cost. Come on out and see an evening of beautiful belly dance and support a good cause! I look forward to seeing you all there!

Yours in dance,
Serena
